DRIVING SAFETY:

University owned/managed vehicles:

A.Staff must be licensed to drive the vehicle for the purpose intended

B.Use is restricted to legitimate University business and activities, and in accordance with any University provision.

C.Must be driven in a moderate and considerate manner

Private vehicles:

A.The vehicle is suitable for the intended use

B.There is appropriate and adequate insurance cover, which includes business    use as applicable.

C.The vehicle is taxed and has a current MOT certificate (if required)

D.They are licensed to drive the vehicle for the purpose intended

Maintenance:

Drivers should ensure, so far as is reasonable practicable, that the vehicle is maintained in a legal and roadworthy state, regardless  of ownership of the vehicle
 Daily checks should be carried out on:
 Wipers / washer jets / washer fluid
 Lights, indicators and horn
 Mirrors
 Body work
 
 Rest Breaks:
A.Every driver is entitled to a break after 4 hours continuous driving or after 5 hours continuous work

B.The maximum daily total driving time should not exceed 9 hours

C.The maximum weekly driving time should not exceed 48 hours

D.The daily rest period must never be less than 8 consecutive hours

Road Traffic Law and Safety Requirements: All legal and safety requirements must be observed at all times, including speed limits and wearing seatbelts.

Passengers: Must behave responsibly and not put the safety of the vehicle at risk. The vehicle capacity must not be exceeded.

Smoking: Is not permitted in University vehicles. It is strongly advised that staff using private vehicles do not smoke whilst driving.

Mobile Phones: Although it is legal to use certain ‘hands free’ phones it is recommended that mobile phones SHOULD NOT be used whilst driving (see Road Safety Tips below). It is an offence to use a hand held phone at any point whilst driving.

Loads: Must be distributed sensibly and secured appropriately. When heavily laden, tyre pressures must be adjusted in accordance with the information provided in the vehicle manual. Maximum gross vehicle weight must not be exceeded.
